Summary

The Minnesota Chapter of APTA worked this session to pass legislation that authorizes PT's to prescribe Disability Parking permits, beginning August 1, 2019. As a key part of a patient's recovery, the PT is in a perfect position to recommend and prescribe a disability parking permit. Taking on this role can save the patient time, effort and money as well as free up time for the surgeon/medical professional and reduce the administrative burden. As PT's begin to take on this responsibility, we want to make sure they are equipped with the knowledge of how to do this. We at the MNPTA worked with the MN Council on Disability and the MN Department of Public Safety to better understand the correct procedures so that we can help PT's stay within the guidelines of who is eligible for permits and what length of time they can be allowed. This course will train the PT to thoroughly assess and appropriately prescribe the disability parking permit for their patients.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the laws and requirements governing disability parking in Minnesota
  • Define the conditions that qualify for a disability parking certificate or license plate
  • Determine the process of certifying an applicant/patient for disability parking
  • Explore frequently asked questions of the certification process

This course fulfills the MN Board of PT requirement for Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants for 1 credit hour of continuing education. Students and other professionals are welcome to view this course but will not qualify for credit.
