Summary

Dystonia is a heterogeneous and commonly misdiagnosed and misunderstood disorder. This course will be completed in two segments: Pathophysiology and Clinical Management. The pathophysiology of dystonia is a quickly evolving field of research because the disorder has been traditionally considered a basal ganglia disorder but now is recognized as a complicated network disorder affecting sensorimotor and cerebellar regions of the cortex. A brief historical perspective on dystonia and an update on the latest evidence-based research will be presented, with relevance to clinical presentation phenotypes. In the second segment, the clinical management of dystonia will be presented and discussed. This course will educate on the optimal clinical examination techniques and a variety of evidence-based treatment strategies that have been shown to be effective in the clinical management of dystonia. Examples of techniques that will be covered include sensorimotor retraining, manual therapy, and movement practice. Lastly, this course will cover common medical interventions used to manage dystonia and the role of rehabilitation services in the interdisciplinary care model for people with dystonia.
